The diesel tree

discussed here.
I've been kicking around energy reserach for a few years and haven't heard of this before. It sounds too good to be true but why isn't it a more serious topic of research?
Factor in a modern breeding program/genetics (of the green revolution sort that increased rice production 20-50 fold (how much exactly?)) and you have a very nice, robust biodiesel factory running off sunlight and nutrients.
Throw in a 3x or 4x improvement on diesel mileage which is difficult but not unachievable and you have some compelling economics for tropical countries to grow their own...

As i've said, there's plenty of energy sloshing around, we've just been too lazy to bother with anything that doesn't gush out of the ground with bugger all effort.
